What’s Human Design All About?
Human Design (HD) is a spiritual tool that looks at various spiritual traditions and modalities, including the positioning of the planets when you were born, to create a map of your body and how energy flows within it (aka your ‘BodyGraph’). Your HD Bodygraph is like a map of your soul that shows you how you energetically function, how to make decisions best, how you learn best, how you will most effectively have your message heard, the greater themes you’re going to face in life, and the greater role you’re designed to embody in the collective.

The Generator = The Great Builders of Our Society
“Ah how perfect it is to be a Generator,” Ra Uru Hu (the founder of the Human Design system) said in one of his teachings about the Generator energy type in Human Design.
Before you misunderstand me, there is no ‘better’ or ‘worse’ in Human Design – there is no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ – every single design is beautiful.
But what Ra hints at in this quote is just how perfect it is to be a Generator in the world today, as our society was actually built by and for other Generators! Today, generators make up about 70% of the population.
While the Manifestor in human design is designed to be the great, big-picture visionary for society, the Generator is designed to actually build out these visions and make things happen!
My absolute favourite thing about Generators is their magnetic aura—they are generally very energizing and fun people to be around. But what the generator is absolutely magical at is creating energy for the world, which is especially valuable to us non-energy beings!
When a Generator is tapped into their sacral centre (the centre responsible for producing our creative and life force energy) and what that sacral centre determines is a YES for them, the Generator actually will create more energy in the process.
The Sacral Centre
What makes someone a Generator is that they have a defined sacral centre. This energetic centre aligns with our ‘gut’ in the body. When someone has their sacral centre defined, it means that they have strong and consistent access to their life force energy and the gut’s decision-making compass.
If a generator feels burnt out or gets tired before the end of the day, it likely means that they’re not doing things that light up their sacral centre. When they are doing what lights up their sacral centre, they could go on and on all day and actually produce more energy for others in the process.
The sacral is designed to respond to life and is rooted in the present moment, which aligns with the generator’s strategy to respond.
The Art of Responding
Generators are designed to respond when interacting with the collective and the world. This works because the Generator’s aura is wide open and magnetic; it will draw in anything and everything it’s meant to. The Generator is then designed to respond to what comes into its orbit, lighting up the sacral centre.
Something I’ve learned in my study of Human Design and in speaking to many generators is that learning how to wait for the right thing to respond to is one of your most significant pieces of life work. It’s challenging for a generator to trust in that waiting but it is where their power is. When generators respond to what’s appropriate for them they are the most energetically powerful type in the human design kingdom.
Typical Generator Strengths & Challenges
Strengths:
- The incredible energetic potential that Generators have from their sacral is one of their superpowers – when they pursue what engages that sacral, they can just go go go all day until they end the day pleasantly exhausted, feeling satisfied with how they’ve used their energy
- Have a powerful and connective relationship to their sacral centre, which provides a clear yes/no guidance they can trust
- A magnetic aura that brings everything to them that is meant for them
- When they’re doing what lights them up, they generate energy for the world and others around them
Challenges:
- Initiating – this is not how a generator is designed to function! A generator is meant to respond and wait for the appropriate thing to respond to.
- Not doing what lights them up inside – which will lead to burnout
- Tapping back into the sacral’s guidance and learning to make decisions from the body, not the head
- Facing frustration when they’re doing what is not aligned for them (if you’re a generator, see frustration as your warning sign to get back and realign with your design!)
