I love December because I’m a wee bit holiday-season obsessed, but it is also the month when we’re all feeling pretty wiped out from the year that passed. Maybe you’re excited for the new year, craving the freshness of the new calendar year. Or you may find the whole ‘new year, new me’ type of energy rather stressful. Here’s the thing: you don’t need a complete plan for the year ahead; what you really need is an energetic reset so you can move into the new year from a space of alignment. This post is all on how to reset your creative energy before the new year.
Before we dive in, I want to share a mindset shift that has me really looking forward to the year ahead in a very low-pressure kind of way. Many of us have been conditioned to feel like January is the beginning, a time we need to ‘start strong’ and set the tone for the year ahead by hustling, dieting, and restricting ourselves. But the reality is that this is a more modern connotation of the new year, one that revolves around a Gregorian calendar. According to the astrological calendar, the new year is actually the spring equinox. If you think about this, it makes alot of sense. When society was predominantly farmers and gatherers, winter was a slower season, while spring was really when things got started, as crops were planted and seeds were sown.
Instead of putting pressure on yourself to bounce right into the new year with fresh energy, allow yourself to ease in and honour the reality of the season (especially if you live in a cold climate!), trusting that your energy and motivation will grow as spring approaches.
With that, here are a few tips for how you can reset your creative energy this time of year, so you’re easing into the new year ready for all it brings.

Make space in December and January to really clear out any mental clutter. Brain dumping, cleaning up old to-do lists, or reconsidering anything that has been sitting on your to-do list because you think you should do it are great places to start.
Tying up loose ends and open loops is a great way to feel more mentally at ease come the holiday season. When I have more mental capacity, I can really recharge and let my creative juices flow again.
When you have cleared out the brain clutter, you make room for new ideas and inspiration to gently flow in.
We don’t all work the same way! When it comes to restoring your energy around the holidays, taking the time to really get to know who you are on an energetic level is helpful, as it helps you reconsider how you think you should operate.
Human design is a fantastic tool for understanding how you actually energetically operate, so you can come up with aligned strategies for how you’ll move throughout the new year ahead.

When you’re running on lower energy at the tail end of the year, be honest with yourself about your capacity. If you’re already feeling drained and needing extra rest, avoid over-committing to extra social plans out of a sense of obligation. Take the time to also look at your to-do list and consider whether there’s anything on it that’s been sitting there for weeks (or months) because you think you should do it (rather than want or need to do it).
As a human design projector with emotional authority, I’ve learned that when I’m feeling drained, it’s essential that I not commit to more on the spot, but instead ask for time to think things over so I’m not committing to things that I actually don’t have the energy or capacity for.
Instead of filling up your empty space with more more more, consider what is actually energizing you right now and how you can have more of that in your life.
By the end of the year, it can feel like you’re almost in autopilot, just trying to make it to your holiday break. What if, instead of staying on board the train, you paused to think about what will actually make you feel most expansive, alive, and easy this time of year? This could be in any area of your life, such as the type of content you want to create, the way you wish to work or the particular people you want to be around who truly energize you.
Tapping into your human design authority to make aligned decisions is a great place to start.

I used to set the expectation that I would plan my entire year in business (sales, marketing-type plans) in December. When I did that, come the new year, I would almost immediately feel like I had to scrap the plan.
Why?
Because it wasn’t really an accurate plan.
I was creating the plan at a time of year when I actually need to wind down and clear the noise. I was creating a plan out of a feeling of should-ness and rushing to complete it before the holidays.
It’s much more effective to recalibrate, rest, journal, play and then plan once you feel more expansive, excited and hopeful.
Space naturally invites clarity.
Your best ideas will come when your energy is grounded. And the only way to ground yourself deeply in your own energy is to give yourself time and space to restore it. Embodying your human design is a fantastic tool for working with yourself and your energetic gifts and capacity, rather than continually spinning your wheels and overwhelming yourself.
