For many on a personal development or self-improvement journey, we collect mindset tools like we used to collect Beanie Babies. And, do not get me wrong, I’m a big fan of mindset work and tools – But when you find yourself overthinking, feeling adrift from your purpose, unfulfilled or burnt out, you may not need more tools in your toolkit… you may just need to approach things from a different perspective.
I believe in using my daily affirmations. I see the clarity of my thinking when I’m up to date on my journaling practice. But sometimes it feels like we’ve exhausted the toolbox, and no matter how much we journal, how many positive visualizations we try, or affirmations we use – we feel stuck. That’s because when we focus solely on mindset, we’re living in the head and missing all the wisdom beneath the surface.
Our mindset is really and truly just one piece of the puzzle. Mindset tools don’t work when our body doesn’t feel regulated and safe. For example, when we’re burnt out and exhausted, reaching for the growth mindset tool we know cognitively will help us is harder. Instead of thinking about mindset in a silo, thinking about mindset alongside our natural flow of energy is a more holistic and effective way to think of the specific mindset tools that will support us.
If you feel like you’ve been doing all the mindset work and just not seeing yourself getting to where you want to go- feeling stuck or disconnected or just doing your mindset and self-care practices out of autopilot, then it may not be more mindset work you need…
If you constantly doubt yourself and your own decisions, overthink, and get lost in your head, traditional mindset tools will only get you so far.
Utilizing the lens of human design allows you to meet yourself where you’re at and discover meaningful and impactful ways to support yourself more holistically than just the silo of ‘mindset work.’ By first grounding your natural rhythm and flow (your human design) and attuning to the natural wisdom within you, you can utilize aligned mindset tools to support you (that work for you).
Additionally, nervous system regulation is essential for you to fully integrate, listen to, and trust the wisdom and knowledge within you. Simple nervous regulation tactics include breathwork, meditation and intentional bodily movement.
Again, mindset work is fantastic and essential – but it’s not always what we need. Sometimes, we need to draw from our self-knowledge because we deeply understand who we are and how our energy functions so we can meet where we are and know what we need in a given moment.
But when we see everything through the lens of human design, we see there is much more nuanced than that and unlock a whole treasure trove of inner wisdom and tools that don’t require us to look outside ourselves.
Mindset work can take us far, but it must account for:
