Whether you’re trying to gain clarity from your subconscious, organize your scattered thoughts, or foster a state of gratitude, there are so many reasons to create your own self healing journal practice.
Journaling is one of the most therapeutic and beneficial resources for supporting your self-help and self-healing and is also regularly used as a complement to coaching and/or therapeutic work. It allows us to release experiences and emotions rather than suppress them, which is key to any self healing journey.
A regular journaling practice has so many benefits, including an improved ability to cope with anxiety and depression, organization of our thoughts to boost productivity and creativity, as well as helping raise awareness of your subconscious thought patterns to create sustainable change.
In this post, I’m sharing 10 guided journal prompts that I share with my clients as a transformational life + mindset coach, including a description of when to consider using each prompt.
If you’re caught up in negative self-talk, it’s time to converse with your sweet inner child. Your inner child is an aspect of yourself that everyone has, whether you nourish it or not. Imagine sitting with your inner child, considering everything you’re currently telling yourself.
Imagine saying these exact (likely harsh) words to the precious child before you. Would you? Would you say those things to her? So WHY are you allowing yourself to say them to yourself?
Instead, journal about what you would say to her and what she would say back to you.
On the flip side, talking to your wise, highest self is one of the best ways to gain clarity in your self-healing journal journey. When you find yourself stuck in a negative thought loop, cluttered with scattered thoughts, or dwelling in the opinions and perceptions of others, it’s time to talk to your highest self.
Imagine sitting in the company of your wisest, most peaceful self – this could be you as an elder whose seen more of what life has to offer. Ask her for clarity and write what she says without question.
Your essence, spirit, or soul (however you personally like to think of it) is the ultimate unique expression of who you are. There is absolutely no one else in the entire universe who shares this essence. Journal on what your FAVOURITE part of your essence is and WHAT superpowers this creates for you in your life.
There are a few ways to phrase this question, and I’m going to give you three ways. This is to help you discover or rediscover what your passions are by dropping deeply into your self-energy..
Gratitude is easy to tap into when things are going ‘right’ and ‘well’ – but it’s essential to find gratitude every day… even on the ‘bad’ days. Here’s a simple way to start. Consider one memory from this past week that you’re truly grateful for, that you’d typically move on from and forget about. Take time to journal on that moment and why you’re so grateful for it.
Consider the songs that meant so much to you over different periods of your life. The songs that just really got you feeling inspired. Take time to journal about each of these songs and the memories they evoke for you, and what they inspired in your life.
Make a playlist with these 5 songs for you to turn to when you need to feel inspired again. (If the idea of doing this with music doesn’t resonate as much with you, you could do it with books or films too!)
What are you most proud of yourself for in your life? What did you do? What allowed you to get there? What can you learn from this experience? The only useful comparison in this life is current you to past versions of you. Taking a moment to really recognize all that you’ve lived through is a beautiful way to embody your self healing journal practice.
What words do you really need to hear right now? Write them down for yourself. Sometimes, when you take the time to journal stream of consciousness without letting your psyche weigh in, you really can be your own best advice giver!
What activities make your “cup feel full?” How can you ensure you do this before supporting others in your life and in your work? Make a list of these activities in your journal, so you have them as evidence for yourself when you’re struggling to come up with an idea of how to take care of yourself!
Many of us are scared to admit what we really feel especially when faced with challenging emotions like grief, anger and sadness. How do you cope when you feel sad or triggered? Where do you need more support in this area?
