Ahhhh, mindset… something I could talk about endlessly…
You see, when I first became an entrepreneur as a copywriter for fellow creative entrepreneurs, I paid zero attention to my mindset’s role in my business.
In my personal life? I was all about mindset and had already undergone years of therapy to cope with my chronic anxiety.
But it wasn’t until I really bridged these two worlds together and started to integrate mindset into my business at the core, where I began to really see any results with my copywriting business.
You know why?
Because mindset is everything.
There’s a well-known adage that entrepreneurship is 90% mindset, 10% strategy… and I know from personal experience that couldn’t be more true.
While you can always learn new strategies, that’s the easy part. The mindset work is the challenging yet most beneficial work you can be doing for your business, but more importantly, for your life. Because let’s face it… for many of us creative entrepreneurs, our business is a major part of our life!)
Let me tell you more about why your mindset is the most powerful tool in your business…
We all have them. Those “WHY ON EARTH DID I DECIDE TO QUIT MY 9-5?!” or “WHO ON EARTH DO I THINK I AM TO EVEN OFFER THIS SERVICE” kind of moments?
Yes… trust me… your most profound darkest worry or secret here? I’ve probably had that worry too.
But the thing is that when you have a healthy mindset practice, you’re able to sustain yourself and your dreams during these kinds of challenging moments. Because you’re able to reconnect to your deeper desired feelings and dreams. You’re able to believe that you are absolutely WORTHY of all your dreams and more abundance…
At the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, I definitely operated from a scarcity-based mindset. If I saw a competitor sign a prospect I’d just had a discovery call with, I would feel crushed. If I had a phenomenal sales call and it didn’t close, I felt like a failure.
It took a lot of internal work on my mindset (especially my money mindset) to believe that we live in an abundant universe. To honestly believe that if that ‘ideal’ client signs with someone else, then we weren’t necessarily so meant to be! And that’s more than okay because it means both myself and that other creative entrepreneur are working with who we are meant to! It saves room for me to work with those dream clients.
It also took time for me to really see that, to this last point, there was room for me to be a copywriter too.
This is a significant mindset block that many new copywriters (or really, any online entrepreneur) face… thinking that it is an “oversaturated market”…
But the thing is, a strong mindset practice allows you to embrace the idea that, yes, while there may be countless other copywriters out there… there is only one you.
Suppose you need a reason, from a bottom line, ROI, business perspective as to why mindset is essential. In that case, it’s this here… it provides the opportunity for financial and other forms of abundance.
But that’s just the beginning.
It can be challenging when our business is really a significant part of our life… especially if you are an artist or creative…
A healthy mindset practice allows us to separate ourselves enough energetically and emotionally from our business so that we can begin by focusing on our core needs and care first. This is why I always say self-care and time for yourself is so essential as an entrepreneur – because our ‘ time off’ is really not guaranteed or mandated… it’s a gift we need to give to ourselves.
I always like to think of the old adage, You can’t pour from an empty cup when it comes to this.
Because I operate from a space and energy of service first (and as a recovering people pleaser), I always want to put others before myself.
This was detrimental to my wellbeing and ultimately led to severe burnout and one (or a few…) massive spiritual awakenings.
Though it can be hard to do so in those busy moments, I always make sure that I spend time filling my own cup before serving others. Because you can’t pour from an empty cup.
This allows you, in turn, to truly SERVE your clients. When you’re well cared for and have spent time loving yourself, your clients will feel that because you will be fully present and yourself in your sessions with them and in the work you do.
When you give yourself the tender love and care you need first, you can show up so fully to serve your clients that they’ll be able to feel your magnetism – and you can expect others to notice and be lining up to work with you as well!
Those “WHO AM I TO BE DOING THIS?” feelings are an example of ye’ olde imposter syndrome. I grappled with this alot at the beginning of my journey as a creative copywriter and often feel it linger in the shadows as I go through a pivot in my business.
This is the thing… we all feel these feelings.
When you have a strong mindset practice, you can fight off these feelings with tools like mantras that you use to empower yourself.
Try this one… I am a badass at what I do!

Mindset practices also allow us to deal with feelings of comparison, and more specifically, jealousy (comparison is really just a form of jealousy and judgement, after all).
Comparing ourselves to others, though tempting and habitual, can be really harmful to our business. It doesn’t allow us to focus on what really lights us up from a soulful perspective, and it doesn’t make us stand out from a bottom-line perspective! So it’s really a lose-lose!
My favourite mindset tip for when you find yourself slipping into comparison mode: switch into comparing yourself with a past version of yourself! That’s the only comparison that matters anyway… and I’m sure when you dig deeper, you’ll see how far you’ve come and how great you’re doing already.
Speaking of comparisons and jealousy, a strong integrated mindset allows you to stay in your own lane rather than follow the crowd.
A strong mindset practice involves digging deep to uncover what really matters to you deep in your soul. To what your deepest desires really are. When you know what those feelings genuinely are and understand what your individual goals really are… you’ll be able to pull on those and remind yourself of those when you catch yourself slipping into someone else’s lane.
My favourite tip for this: when you catch yourself feeling jealous or envious over someone else or their success, ask yourself… is this really something that I want and aligns with my values? (if yes, remind yourself that we live in an abundant universe, and there is more than enough to go around. If NOT, gently remind yourself to stay in your own lane and remind your self of YOUR individual desires) I’m sure you’ll see that a reality check is beneficial.
