Responsible for most of our thoughts (about 95%, actually…), the power of the subconscious mind cannot be understated. The subconscious is a deep and thorough subject (which I’ll dive deeper into in later posts), which is why this post is meant to introduce your subconscious’s power.
Here we’ll look at the subconscious mind, its powers, and how to awaken and tap deeper into it spiritually.
Pioneering psychologist Sigmund Freud introduced the concept of the three-level mind model:
You can think of your subconscious as a giant bank of information (thoughts, beliefs, ideas, memories) you have absorbed and stored in your life, some of which you can access, some that you cannot. The subconscious allows us to perform tasks repeatedly without much thought; things we take for granted, such as eating, driving a car, or riding a bike.
The important thing to understand about the subconscious is that it’s responsible for 95% of our thoughts. That’s a massive role in our lives! If you’re not actively taking time to attune yourself to your subconscious and the thoughts within it, you could inadvertently be allowing your subconscious to rule.
The subconscious’ job is literally to use our past thoughts, beliefs and experiences to prove that what our conscious mind is trying to tell us is true. That’s its purpose, career and life’s work by default! It will try to keep us safe (which means to NOT venture into the unknown). It’s difficult to live a fulfilling, aligned and creative life if you’re unwilling to get uncomfortable and venture into the unknown.
If you consciously believe you can’t be or do something, the subconscious will work to prove that right, creating the circumstances and stories that allow it to prove that belief right. This is why it’s essential to spend time attuning and awakening to the power of your subconscious.
As the subconscious mind is so powerful, we need to take the time to awaken to it rather than to let ourselves be ruled by it without our awareness.
Awareness is the gateway to change. You cannot change a thought, pattern, habit or belief until you are aware.
That’s why we must take the time to awaken to the power of our subconscious through techniques like interrupting + questioning our thoughts, journaling through distressing times and thoughts, and meditating to align ourselves with our truest, highest sense of self.
Awareness is the gateway to change. You cannot change a thought, pattern, habit or belief until you are aware.
There are a couple of simple yet transformational techniques you can use to awaken your consciousness of your subconscious mindfully.
The first is to allow yourself to observe your thoughts. Rather than believing exactly what your thoughts are telling you to be true, take a moment to mindfully disengage from them to ask if that is a thought you identify with and want to believe.
You are not your thoughts. As many spiritual teachers have put it: you can’t possibly be the voice in your head because if you were, then who’s listening? You’re the listener. Psychologically separating from your thoughts can be much easier when you allow this spiritual concept to penetrate your psyche.
Another fabulous way of awakening your consciousness to your subconscious is to journal, especially amid an obsessive thought loop or negative thought pattern. Journaling allows you to mindfully raise awareness of your thought patterns, de-stress and disengage from these thoughts and feelings, and give space to get back in touch with your heart and intuition.
